Caviar production company looks to the Arade river
24/9/2011
Promoters of a project that aims to produce caviar in the Algarve want to start construction of a sturgeon farm along the Arade riverbank in Lagoa municipality, by the end of this year.
“There are installations to be refurbished and investors in the location” the team’s biologist, Pedro Paulo, told Lusa News Agency.
He added that the team, along with the University of the Algarve (UAlg) are trying to create a pilot unit to support the productive structure.
Atlantic Sturgeon have already been seen in the Guadiana and Arade Rivers, where the new unit will be located, but the species became extinct in Portugal during the 1980’s.
Promoters of the project, the UAlg biologist, an aquaculture specialist and a ‘gourmet’ businessman, estimate that by 2015 a range of Portuguese gourmet restaurants and shops will be able to sell caviar produced in the Algarve.
The aim is to install a sturgeon production unit by the end of the year, to commercialise four different species, but the most valuable, ‘Beluga’, has a productive cycle of seven years.
A kilogramme of caviar from that species, which takes the longest amount of time to produce eggs, can cost between €1,000 and €1,500. The group hope that by 2016, the unit will provide between 600kg and 700kg of caviar per year.
Despite there being other potential locations in the Algarve “already identified and negotiated” Pedro Paulo said that the most likely is Lagoa, where negotiations are ongoing with the authorities so that the project can advance there.
Because of it being one of the most valuable fish in the world, the sturgeon is at risk of extinction and at the moment is almost only possible to breed through aquaculture, according to the biologist.
Valery Afilov is the man behind the idea, who worked at a sturgeon farm for 12 years in the Ukraine before moving to Portugal 10 years ago, and has wanted to import the idea ever since.
The project was distinguished at the ‘Ideias em Caixa’ competition, a partnership between the Regional Centre for Inovation in the Algarve (CRIA) and Caixa Geral de Depósitos Bank.
